Bitcoin Core Developer’s Crypto Was Stolen During 2023 New Year Celebration
Luke Dashjr, who claims to be the longest-serving Bitcoin Core developer, revealed that an unknown hacker had stolen his Bitcoins during the New Year celebrations.
The total amount of Bitcoin stolen is unknown, but in a Twitter thread, Dashjr traced “some of it” to a wallet address that received approximately 217 Bitcoins, or the equivalent of $3.6 million at the price of Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
Dashjr blamed the hack on his Bitcoin wallet on a compromised PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) key and later, in a Reddit discussion, he stated the attacker’s IP was from the ColoCrossing servers.
He was at a loss to explain how his cold wallet was hacked, but he said the last time he accessed it was in September.
Dashjr posted a follow-up tweet on Twitter and contacted ColoCrossing and he vowed to change his server provider. Several respondents also flagged the security breach he tweeted last November as possibly related to the hack.
Dashjr continued to answer questions on Twitter, saying he believed “everything was premeditated”. He also strongly warns people against using Bitcoin Knots, a Bitcoin wallet signed by his now compromised PGP key. Dashjr also tweeted to the FBI for help, to no avail.
Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao offered his support, saying he had informed the exchange’s security team about the theft, and that any crypto linked to the hack sent to Binance would be frozen immediately.
